Because of the many problems threatening peace in the world, one of the greatest importance is posed by ethnic conflict and the refugee problem resulting.
Therefore, the jury of the Felix Houphouet Boigny Peace Prize has decided unanimously to award the High Commissioner in conjunction with the United Nations for the work undertaken and secondly, the High Commissioner for Refugees, Mrs. Ogata, for the outstanding manner in which it conducted the mission entrusted to the success that his efforts have received and have attracted the attention of the international community on the refugee problem.
