Traditional skills related to loincloth weaving in Côte d'Ivoire" were inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the 18th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Kasane, Botswana, from December 5 to 9, 2023.
This is the fourth time that cultural elements from the State of Côte d'Ivoire have been inscribed on this List, following the Gbofé d'Afounkaha (2008), trumpet music from the Tagbana community (2008), balafon-related cultural practices and expressions from the Senoufo communities of Mali, Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire (2012), and Zaouli, popular music and dance from the Gouro communities of Côte d'Ivoire (2017).
This inscription is the result of excellent work by experts from the Ministry of Culture and Francophonie, with the support of the Permanent Delegation of Côte d'Ivoire to UNESCO.
On behalf of the State Party of Côte d'Ivoire to the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the communities concerned, H.E. Ms Bakayoko-Ly Ramata, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Côte d'Ivoire to UNESCO, thanked the members of the Committee for this inscription.
She praised the determination of the Minister of Culture and Francophonie, Madame Françoise Remarck, to implement the policy of safeguarding Ivorian intangible cultural heritage, as well as the dedication of local communities working to keep these skills alive.
These communities were very appreciative of the tribute paid to them, and expressed their gratitude to the members of the committee.
The Ambassador reassured the Committee of the commitment of the State of Côte d'Ivoire and the communities holding these skills to implement the safeguarding measures now registered with UNESCO.
