Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO paid an official visit to Côte d\'Ivoire from 5 to 6 June 2012.

During this visit, she met the President of the Republic, Mr. Alassane Ouattara and several government officials, including Prime Minister Jeannot Ahoussou-Kouadio, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Daniel Kablan Duncan, the Minister of Education National, Ms. Kandia Camara and all ministers responsible for areas of competence of UNESCO

The visit of the Director General was primarily an opportunity to open the process of regional consultations with Member States and National Commissions in the African Region for the preparation of the Medium-Term Strategy for 2014-2021 and the program and Budget for 2014-2017

 
Consultation with the Executive Director of Member States and National Commissions of the Africa region on the preparation of the Medium-Term Strategy for 2014-2021 (37 C / 4) and Programme and Budget for 2014-2017 (37 C / 5 ), Abidjan, June 6, 2012

The opening session of the Consultation was held in Abidjan, the congress of the Hotel Ivoire in the presence of several institutional authorities, headed by the Prime Minister, Head of Government, representing the President of the Republic and several Ministers, including guardianship over areas of competence of UNESCO, Education, Science, Culture and Francophonie, Communication and Information, the Forestry Commission, the Environment, Youth and Sports.

The Director General of UNESCO said that since his appointment as head of UNESCO, several reform projects have been launched to give more visibility to the organization and make it more efficient and closer to the ground.

\"We have to take another step and I hope that these regional consultations mark the start of the overhaul of UNESCO in the long run,\" said Executive Director. The decisions made during the consultations, she said, will determine the radiation of the organization for the coming years.

\"Without peace, there is no development, no science and research, without peace there is no action to eradicate poverty\", clarified the Director General of Unesco, which invites to move from words to deeds. \"It is time to focus on areas where we have a comparative advantage and the greatest impact,\" she encouraged.


According to Ms. BOKOVA key priorities remain for her culture of peace and sustainable development. However, the oceans, the education of girls and women, culture and development are key areas where the organization has strengthened its positions.

The Executive Director does not forget education, science is the \"key, the culture that the future of Africa.\" Hence the commitment to create the powerful tools which enable the continent to unlock its potential.

\"We must also protect the African cultural and natural heritage is a source of growth and dignity,\" she vows formulated as expensive.

President of the Ivorian National Commission for UNESCO, the Minister of Education, Kandia Camara explained the importance of the Abidjan meeting. A meeting to lead effectively, cooperation between member states and particularly those in sub-Saharan Africa with Unesco.
